Andrew Anfora (Prof. Rodney Welch, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): The Effects of Serine and Acetate Metabolism on the Ability of Escherichia coli CFT073 to Colonize the Murine Urinary Tract.  Andrew is currently a postdoc at the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation in La Jolla, CA, in the lab of Dr. Scott Lesley.

Megan Bohse (Prof. Jon Woods, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): Characterization of the Yeast Phase Specific YPS3 Gene of Histoplasma capsulatum. Megan has taken a position at Epic Systems in Madison, WI, as a software consultant.

Lisa Bowers (Prof. Marcin Filutowicz, Bacteriology):  Elements of Plasmid R6K Replication Control. Lisa is a postdoc in the lab of Dr. Kathleen Ryan, Dept. of Plant and Microbia Biology, University of California-Berkeley.

Shaun Brinsmade (Prof. Jorge Escalante, Bacteriology): Genetics and Biochemistry of Class II Phosphotransacetylases: Enzymes and Sensors of Nutrition, Energy and Redox State of Prokaryotic Cells. Shaun is a postdoc with Prof. Abraham Sonensheim at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA.

Hyunsic Choi (Prof. William McClain, Bacteriology): The Seventy-Six Nucleotides in tRNA Act As One Functional Unit.  Hyunsic plans to do a postdoc after a short visit to Korea.

Carlene Chun (Prof. Margaret McFall-Ngai, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): Genomic and Biochemical Changes during the Onset of the Squid-Vibrio Symbiosis.  Carlene is expanding her studies to pursue a medical degree at Stanford University.

Daniel Garcia (Prof. Joseph Dillard, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): Liberation of Pro-inflammatory Peptidoglycan Fragments from the Gonococcal Cell.  Dan is a postdoctoral trainee at New York State-Emerging Infectious Diseases, Dept. of Bacteriology, with Dr. Kimberly Musser.

Jennifer Giel (Prof. Patricia Kiley, Biomolecular Chemistry):  Role of IscR in regulation of Fe-S Biogenesis in Escherichia coli.  Jennifer is a postdoctorate with Dr. Jun Zhu in the Dept. of Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Brian Haugen (Prof. Rodney Welch, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): Characterization of the Response of Uropathogenic Escherichia coli Strain CFT073 to D-Serine. Brian is currently a Presidential Management Fellow at the National Institutes of Health.

Shanil Haugen (Prof. Richard Gourse, Bacteriology):  rRNA Regulation Depends on Nonoptimal Sigma Region 1.2 Promoter Interactions: Fine Structure of a New RNA Polymerase Recognition Element.  Shani is a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institute of Arthritis, and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, NIH, with Dr. Vittorio Sartorelli.

Erica Lannan (Prof. Paul Friesen, Biochemistry): Execution of Baculovirus-induced Apoposis in Drosophila Requires Caspases DrICE, CDP1, and Dronc. Erica is a postdoctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Signal Transduction, Molecular Endocrinology Group, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Research Triangle Park, NC.

Rebecca Lopez (Prof. Donna Paulnock, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): The Role of IFN-a/b in the Innate Immune Response to African Trypanosomes.  Rebecca is a postdoc in the Dept. of Hematology at the National Institutes of Health with Dr. Richard Childs.

Rachel Mooney (Prof. Robert Landick, Biochemistry): The Secret Life of NusG: A Functional Analysis of a Universal Transcriptional Regulator and Its Surprising Relationship with σ70. Rachel is continuing her studies as a postdoctoral fellow on the laboratory of Prof. Landick, Dept. of Biochemistry, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Lindsey Moser (Prof. Stacey Schultz-Cherry, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): Insights into Astrovirus Pathogenesis: How Barrier Permeability, ERK Activation, and Early Viral Events Collaborate to Cause Diarrhea.  Lindsey is continuing her studies as a postdoc in the Schultz-Cherry lab, but plans to join the Munich Intellectual Property Institute in Munich, Germany in October 2008.

Zakee Sabree (Prof. Jo Handelsman, Bacteriology): Heterologous Expression in the Metagenomics Era. Zakee is a postdoc with Prof. Nancy Moran, Dept. of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Arizona, Tucson.

Jonah Sacha (Prof. David Watkins, Pathology): T Cell Epitope Ontogeny in AIDS-virus Infected Cells. David will continue his postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Prof. Watkins, Dept. of Pathology, University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Laura Walters (Prof. Rodney Welch, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): StcE, a Mucin-Specific Protease, Recognizes Glycan-Induced Conformations.  Laura plans to complete her M.D. in fulfillment of the Medical Scientist Training Program.

Priscilla Van Wynsberghe (Prof. Paul Ahlquist, Molecular Virology): Virus Reproduction: Membrane Localization of Nodaviral RNAs during Replication Complex Assembly.  Priscilla is a postdoc in the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of California-San Diego with Prof. Amy Pasquinelli.

Carmen Zayas Aponte (Prof. Jorge Escalante-Semerena, Bacteriology): Studies of the Last Step of de Novo Corrin Ring Biosynthesis and the Nucleotide Loop Assembly Pathway of Coenzyme B12 Synthesis.

2008

Beth Ann Browne (Prof. Diana Downs, Department of Bacteriology):  A Link between Tryptophan Biosynthesis and PURF-Idependent Phosphoribosyl Amine Formation in YJGF Mutant Strains of Salmonella Enterica.  Beth is currently employed by Dow Biocides in Buffalo Grove, IL as a Senior Microbiologist.

Kendal Galbraith Cooper (Prof. Jon Woods, Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and the Department of Bacteriology):  Studies and Applications of Gene Disruption in Histoplasma capsulatum.  Kendal is postdoc research geneticist with the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center in Madison, WI.

Mary Patricia Craver (Prof. Laura Knoll, Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology): Isolation and Characterization of Toxoplasma gondii Bradyzoite Development Mutants. She is doing a postdoc with Gary Huffnagle at the University of Michigan

Matthew Frankel (Prof. Laura Knoll, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): Characterization of a Unique Nuclear Transport Pathway Required for Virulence of the Parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Matthew is a postdoc with Prof. Olaf Schneewind at the University of Chicago.

Bailey Freeman (Prof. Donna Paulnock, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): Modulation of Macrophage Cytokine Responses and Antigen Presentation during African Trypanosomiasis. Bailey is currently doing a postdoc with Prof. Mark Slifka at Oregon State University of Health Sciences.

Zomary Flores Cruz (Prof. Caitilyn Allen, Department of Plant Pathology): Role of odidative stress response in Ralstonia solanacearum virulence. Zomary is a postdoc with Prof. Dean Gabriel at the University of Florida in the Plant Pathology Department.

Jane Garrity (Prof. Jorge Escalante, Department of Bacteriology):  N-Lysine Acylation and Control of Coenzyme A Homeostasis in Salmonella enterica.  Jane is currently employed by the University of Nebraska as a Licensing Manager.

Jeremy Jones (Prof. Stacey Schultz-Cherry, Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology):  Novel Methods for Prevention and Control of Influenza.  Jeremy is a postdoc with Jorge Osorio in the School of Veterinary Medicine in the Pathobiological Sciences Department at UW-Madison.

Spencer Hoover (Prof. Robert Striker, Medicine and Medical Mircobiology and Immunology): Repurpsing Thiopurines As Novel Antivirals. Spencer is a postdoc with Brian Pfleger at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Chemical Engineering Department.

Petra Kohler (Prof. Joseph Dillard, Medical Microbiology and Immunology):  Components of the Neisseria gonorrhoeae Type IV Secretion System and their Interactions with Peptidoglycan.  Petra is a postdoc at the University of Minnesota in the Department of Microbiology.

Kimberly Luke (Prof. Jon Woods, Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and Department of Bacteriology):  Regulation of the cellular p53 protein by the Influenza Non-Structural protein.  Kimberly is employed as a Senior Scientist at Gentel Biosciences in Madison, WI.

Ryan Newton (Prof. Katrina McMahon, Civil and Environmental Engineering): Cosmopolitan Freshwater Bacterial Dynamics in Lakes across Time and Space. Ryan is a postdoc with Prof. Mary Ann Moran, School of Marine Science, University of Georgia, Athens.

S. Brook Peterson (Prof. Jo Handelsman, Bacteriology):  Interactions between Rhizosphere Bacteria. Brook is a postdoc for Prof. Matthew Parsek, Dept. of Microbiology, University of Washington, Seattle.

Gregory Richards (Prof. Heidi Goodrich-Blair, Department of Bacteriology):  The Regulator LrhA and Lipase Activity in Xenorhabdus nematophila Insect Pathogenesis.  Gregory is a postdoc in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Illnois-Champaign/Urbana.

Courtney Robinson (Prof. Jo Handelsman, Bacteriology): Robustness of Lepidopteran Midgut Microbial Communities.  Courtney is a postdoc with Prof. Vincent Young, Internal Medicine, Medical School at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Steven Rutherford (Prof. Richard Gourse, Department of Bacteriology):  Insights into the Mechanism of DksA Action at Ribosomal RNA Promoters in Escherichia coli.  Steven is a postdoc with Prof. Bonnie Basler at Princeton University.

Wilmara Salgado-Pabón (Prof. Joseph Dillard, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): Neisseria gonorrhoeae Processing of Chromosomal DNA for Direct Secretion via a Type IV Secretion System. Wilmara is a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Philippe Sansonetti at the Pasteur Institute, Paris.

Erik Settles (Prof. Paul Friesen, Department of Biochemistry):  Flock House virus induces replication dependent apoptosis by depleting AIAP1.  Erik is a postdoc with Stacey Schultz-Cherry in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the UW-Madison.

Rose Szabady (Prof. Rodney Welch, Medical Microbiology and Immunology): Secreted Mucinases of Enteric Bacterial Pathogens: Modulators of Host Defense. Rose is a postdoc with Prof. Fiona Powrie in the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology , University of Oxford, England.

Michael Thorgersen (Prof. Diana Downs, Bacteriology): Insights into Metabolic Links between Cellular Iron and Sulfur Metabolism in Salmonella enterica. Michael is a postdoc with Prof. Michael Adams, Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Georgia, Athens.

Duy Tran (Prof. Paul Friesen, Department of Biochemistry):  Drosophila melanogaster DIAP2 regulates the anti-apoptotic function of DIAP1.  Duy is a postdoc at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.

Erin E. Herbert Tran (Prof. Heidi Goodrich-Blair, Department of Bacteriology):  Regulation of Xenorhabdus nematophila Host Interactions by the CpxRA Two-Component System. Erin is a postdoc at the National Institutes of Health in the Laboratory of Cell Biology in Bethesda, MD.
